Columbia Road Flower Market

3 May 2009 0 views 3 Comments

Michael has an all day football extravaganza today, so I decided to busy myself with a trip to Columbia Road Flower Market. Naturally, I forgot my camera, but it was so crowded that it would have been hard to capture the scene anyway. The market is pretty amazing. If and when my mom comes out, this is going to be a top priority because they have every kind of flower and plant you can imagine, in every color and shape you could want. The only thing I noticed a distinct lack of was seeds. But you could get lots of little seedlings, which is probably better anyway. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn’t take her there because she would probably just get frustrated that she couldn’t take it all home… or worse yet, make me carry it all back the flat and ship it for her!

Each stand has workers trying to get you to buy their stuff, but not in a pushy, in your face kind of way. They are all yelling “4 BIG BUNCHES FOR A TENNER!!!”    and “WHO WANTS THE LAST CREEPING GERANIUM???”  both phrases I didn’t ever imagine writing on this blog. I didn’t go too crazy, but I did buy one of the 4 big bunches for a tenner (purple tulips… probably 30-40 stems) and some kind of weird red flower that looks like folded velvet.

I also managed to get sucked in to a cupcake and tea shop. They have a handwritten sign on the wall which states “This is a tea shop… please don’t use the C word.” If I were on Facebook right now, I would tag that with an “I like.”  There is also a Blik store on Columbia Road! In fact, it featured (among others) the design Michael and I put up in our bedroom before we left Phoenix. And the best news of all? I fell asleep on the subway on the way home, and woke up one stop before my planned destination, with Baby Sutton kicking me! What a clever fetus!!!

On the Baby front, all is well. He has taken up some sort of neo-martial arts in my belly, and practices daily from 5:30-6:30pm, then again at about 10:30 – 11:30pm. I usually get woken up 2 or 3 times in the night with him dancing on my bladder, too. And we can now see him kicking from the outside, which is pretty cool. Michael has seen it a few times and it always makes him grin! I have my final scan on Wednesday, which is meant to verify the due date and make sure Baby is growing at the right speed. Updates then!

I love that red flower. That is just beautiful. It sounds like you had a fantastic day, keep posting them so I can live vicariously through you. All except the baby part, I will leave that all for you. :) How long does that market run for? It sounds like a place I would like to see some day.

Jenn how cool you and Michael are in London. I lived right off Portabello Rd in Notting Hill in 1988, it was SO much fun. I think the red flower is called a Coxcomb.
