Finally broke down…
I bought nappies today. And nappy rash cream. And baby wash. And baby shampoo. And baby wipes. I know six months from now, these will all be part of our normal routine, but it felt very weird and special to be buying all these little bits for someone who isn’t even really here yet. On the nappy note – we have been trying to decide if we should go with cloth, disposables, or hybrids. Regular disposables were really out of the question due to the environmental impact, and lately I have been reading about how cloth is actually not as good for the environment as you might think, once you consider the wasted water to clean them, and/or the environmental cost of fuel and chemicals if you hire a service to do it for you. Hybrids seemed interesting… they are a plastic pull up or velcro style pant with a washable cotton liner and throwaway inserts to collect the poo. You buy about 15 or so of the plastic pants and liners, and then buy boxes of the liners, which you can flush, compost, or just throw away, and they biodegrade in 30 days (opposed to the 500 years it takes a normal disposable to degrade). Then I found NatureBaby Nappies, which are disposable, but are made of corn, and therefore are supposed to degrade within about a month. And these supposedly have the same performance as a standard plastic nappy. They also have no chemicals such as chlorine, which are found in the standard Pampers and Huggies type brands. I know you will all anxiously be awaiting the trials, and I will make sure to keep you informed!
