Tommee Tippee Can Suck My Boob… please?
I got it in my head that I should get a breast pump so I can do things such as get a haircut without leaving Michael with a screaming, starving baby, or go out to dinner without having to wear a shirt with easy access. I also thought Michael might like to feed him from time to time as a way to bond. With this in mind I did some research and found the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Manual Pump, which was supposed to make all my dreams come true. Except that it sucks and not in the way it is supposed to. I actually started to tear up because I couldn’t get this “3 piece, simple to use pump” to work. What a disappointment. I don’t know if it is me, my boob, or the product, but it didn’t seem like it was even possible for this thing to pull milk out since the pump area lets air in. Now I’m trying to decide if I should bring it to the breastfeeding clinic on Friday, possibly wasting 2 hours and 2 pounds of bus fare, return it, or revenge melt it in the microwave.

The best pump on the market is the Medela pump (electric). As a working Mom who nurses her kids for a year, this is worth every penny. Don’t go cheap on the pump!!
Thanks Jessica… I wanted to try a manual one just to see how the whole thing would go. I realize now I need to be either all in or all out! I’ll check out the Medela.
I used the electric one at the hospital because I was there for a week with A., and I did like it much better than the manual, but I did get used to using the Avent manual pump. It took some time, both to get used to it and get the milk going, though. I ended up using it rarely in the end as his feedings got far enough apart for me to slip out (which also coincided with his starting solids). With my work-at-home situation, I didn’t see the expense as worth it, but if you’re planning to keep breastfeeding after going back to work, then spend the money. Definitely. The hand pumps are really hard (although your problem might be more the brand–many of them are apparently just plain awful). One problem I had, though, ended up being related to how I put it together after cleaning it. Darrick figured it out and it worked MUCH better. If you get another pump (and don’t go with Medela), read lots of reviews.
Oh, and don’t buy used. Even if you replace all the replaceable bits, the pump itself gets bacteria in it. Not worth the risk.
