Hybrid Signs
Baby signing seems to be taking a big leap forward. Since Zev was around 4 months old, we’ve been making the sign for more, and he caught on quickly. He began to sign more for everything, though, as many babies do. Apparently, they are so excited that someone finally understood their intentions that they make the same sign, hoping it will mean different things. The same is true of the 2nd and 3rd signs. They make the sign for the right thing, but often attach it to the wrong thing, too. So far Zev has mastered more, drink, eat, and milk. He has tried to make the sign for Mommy, Daddy, banana, and all done, but he has not got those down yet. When he learns a new sign, he sometimes stops making all the other signs for a few days and that new sign replaces everything. Its really fascinating to watch the learning process. I feel like I can tell what is running through his mind as he goes through the steps. But the most fascinating thing about it is that he has created his own signs! Or sign (singular) anyway… he does a few things that might also be signs, but I can’t tell if its that or if he’s just exploring his hands and how they work. But the one sign he definitely has created is more-eat. The sign for more is touching the fingertips together a few times… kind of like you’re pushing together a pile of something. The sign for eat is like you’re bringing a bit of food to your mouth. You do more with both hands, and eat with one hand. So he has created this sign where he brings both of his hands to his mouth at the same time and touches the fingertips together, which I think means more-eat, because he first started doing it when I would give him a drink, then he would sign for more and I’d try to give him another drink and he’d push the cup away and do the more-eat sign! What a clever, clever boy.
